Why Wearing Neutral Colors for Your Photo Sessions is Best (Plus Where to Shop)
When preparing for a family photo session with your Cocoa Beach family photographer, choosing the right outfits can make a big difference. To put it simply, neutral colors are your best friends—shades like beige, white, black, and soft earth tones—are excellent options. Here’s why:
Timeless Look
Neutral tones are classic and never go out of style. Years from now, your photos will still look elegant and relevant, without the distraction of trendy, bold colors that may age your images.
Focus on You
Bright colors and busy patterns can steal attention. Neutral outfits keep the focus where it belongs—on your faces, expressions, and family connection.
Easy Coordination
Neutrals make coordinating outfits for the whole family a breeze. Everyone can wear different shades that naturally complement each other, creating a cohesive look without clashing.
Versatile Backgrounds
Whether your shoot is indoors or outdoors, neutral tones work well with almost any setting, blending into the background while highlighting your family.
Flattering for Skin Tones
Neutral colors often enhance skin tones, ensuring everyone looks their best in the photos.
Color Cast
One thing I have seen MANY times and something you want to avoid is color casting. This is when someone wears a strong bright color (think a bright red or hot pink, even blues) and that color gets reflected onto the skin of others in the image. I see this happen most often when parents wear a strong color, and then have a smaller child standing near them. It can cast a strong color hue over their face and end up completely changing their natural look. Neutral colors won't do this!
Best Places to Buy Neutral Clothing for Families
While this is not a huge comprehensive list, here are the top places I suggest to families if they ask for places to consider shopping for their sessions:
Old Navy Affordable, stylish, and known for its family-friendly options. Old Navy offers plenty of neutral basics for adults and kids, making it easy to mix and match. (and we love variety!)
H&M H&M has a wide range of neutral tones for all ages, including cozy sweaters, simple shirts, and comfortable pants. Their selection is great for creating a chic, minimal look.
Gap Gap specializes in classic, comfortable styles in neutral shades. You can find timeless pieces for both adults and kids that work well together in photos.
Zara For more fashion-forward options that still stay within a neutral palette, Zara is a great choice. Their collections offer trendy yet subtle pieces for every family member.
J.Crew If you're looking for high-quality neutral staples, J.Crew has plenty of sophisticated options. They offer refined basics that are perfect for creating polished, timeless looks for family portraits.
Target I know, Target? But this one can be great at times! Target's clothing section can have an excellent variety of affordable neutral options for the entire family. It's definitely worth checking out if you have one local to you and are pressed for time.
One last parting note, you don't have to match everyone! It's really great when you have a few different solid colors and textures, with maybe one (not too busy)print. Variety does look really nice, as long as you are all following the same color palette. Work with your photographer by sending them your color palette idea and see if they think it will look nice for the setting.
